Ashlyn

Best buds
Love, love love this sweet heart. It seems like she just decided overnight when she turned 2 to become a big kid! Wha?! Who said that was ok with Mama anyway?

As always, Ashlyn is doing so many cute things all the time. It is so cliche but so true that I just keep thinking every stage she's at can't get any cuter, and then the next one is cuter! (and by the way, I bet most moms out there would agree with me that I pretty much gave up trying to avoid being cliche when I became a mom!)

She now wants to walk EVERYWHERE. Pretty much refuses to let me carry her until she's aboslutely exhausted. I have a firm "hand holding" rule--meaning she has to hold my hand or she loses her walking privilege--because she is also a runner! Most times it works pretty good. A couple of weeks ago she walked through my entire Walmart shopping trip, which was like an hour long. Just held my hand and trooped along as I pushed the cart with one hand. (you can imagine how fun that was for me after an hour's worth of shopping's stuff got put into that cart!)

She also really likes to climb in and out of her car seat alone. I'm not always onboard with this because if she's in the mood to "stop and smell the roses" (i.e. stop and examine every little crumb she notices on the seat, or point and tell me all the colors of everything she sees, etc...), it can take FOREVER which we don't always have when we're trying to get somewhere. But it is super cute. I especially love when she finally makes it to the door to lower herself out of the car... standing from the side all you can see is these 2 little feet slowly, slowly lowering out from under the door until they finally make it to the ground. I really should take a video sometime, it is hilarious.

She has mastered her colors--all the ones in the rainbow plus brown, black, and white. She really loves to point out the colors of everything to me. It is so fun. She also knows quite a few shapes--star, circle, square, triangle, "kite" (diamond- ha ha) and likes to point those out too. She can recognize a few letters--A, B, Y, T and O I think. The other day she found a little scrap of paper on the floor somewhere shaped like a Y and she brought it to me, saying "y! y!" it was so cute and I was pretty proud! :)

I will probably post more about this another time when I can get some pictures up, but we have been going to a mommy-and-me gymnastics class! It's at the gym I used to coach at, and taught by my super awesome old boss. It has really been Collin's big idea to put her into gymnastics for the past like, 8 months, but I insisted on holding off until she was at least 2! Ashlyn is really active and pretty much never sits still so the idea was to have a positive outlet for her energy and also to give her fun ways to learn some coordination. The first couple of classes went AWFUL! I was about in tears when we left. Finally the 3rd time things turned around, big time! And it has been fun ever since. In a couple of weeks Collin will be home for spring break and then I definitely plan on taking some pictures when they go to class together!

Ashlyn is talking more and more. She surprises us all the time with new words she knows. She is just starting to put 2 words together, sometimes. I am working reeeaaallly hard on trying to get a second word tacked onto her infamous "mmmoooorrreee?" .... it is slow going! But the other day she did ask for "more bubbles" and she asks for "more juice" sometimes. I'm sure it'll be a little sad when she really uses "more" in a sentence instead of just her go-to for whatever she wants... but for now I am ready to hear it a little less!!!! Oh, and one other thing... her pronunciation of "fork" pretty much has us trying not to laugh all the time. It just sneaks up on me. I'm like, "what did you say?" ha ha
She really likes to point out things she sees if she knows the word for them. When we're driving in the car I will hear "tree!" "clouds!" "car!" etc. and that happens really everywhere we go. She'll keep saying whatever it is she's pointing out until I acknowledge it and tell her good job. :)

A big thing she does ALL the time right now is galloping! She has gotten really good at "hop"ping (or "boing" is also what she says when she hops), and she'd do that a lot, but she also really likes to run. So she figured out that if she hops while she runs it is the perfect combination! So now she gallops everywhere she goes. It is so, so funny. I also need to get a video of that!

Also, like a week after her birthday she all of a sudden decided she has to pick out what clothes she wears. Wha!? That came out of nowhere! But she will seriously throw a FIT if I try to put something on her that she didn't have a "say" in choosing. So I now let her "choose" between 2 choices for clothes and she is perfectly happy with that. Also, there is one shirt (that I was super excited for her to wear, so it is a bummer!) that she is terrified of (I think just because it has a character on it and she's never worn a shirt with any characters that I can remember?), so if I really want her to wear something I will just have that shirt be the other choice so I know she'll pick what I want! ha HA! {So, so sad that I'm proud to have outsmarted a 2 year old.}

Well, those are the highlights. We are having fun as a family and really enjoying having a little more time together after the busy wrestling season. I will just add some pics with captions for your further enjoyment! (all 5 of you who read this!)

A big fan of "cooking" but it has to be with Mom's real bowls and spoons!

Enjoying the BEAUTIFUL weather we had last week!

I never remember to take a pic of her hair when it's in the "Transition" between bathtime and styling the following morning?! Anyway, this one was a little extreme due to different things I wanted for the following morning  but it always looks pretty funny like this. We love it. She actually will spend a long time admiring it in the mirror herself!

One of my friends gave Ashlyn these pretty necklaces for her birthday..... so right up her alley! She loves to put them on and off and say "pitty neckshash"

This is the face I get when I ask for a "cheese"

Warm enough to play outside without a jacket! (notice the "pretty  necklace!")
Debating the importance of the "stay on the grass" rule for playing in the front yard...

Actually got a real smile!
Although when she's cheesing for the camera she  also thinks she needs to keep coming closer and closer!
Best picture ever!!! These curtains are a favorite game!
New hairstyle---I'm working on learning some flat-twisting techniques and this was my maiden voyage :)

Looking pretty in church clothes

She has really gotten good at walking around in Mom & Dad's  slippers and shoes!

{Someday I will teach Collin to use the zoom...} Love this girl and I need more pictures of the 2 of us together.

The xylophone is a constant *pretty* sound around here!

Ashlyn and Addison--these 2 get to play together a lot while Mommies  hang out!

Playing games on Daddy's phone... I love this!

Enjoying some "legit" Dulce de Leche given to us from Uncle Alex's mission... can you guess what she said after this? {"mmmmooooorrreeee?"}

Bad quality pic but she had a great time chillin' and eating fries for like 2 hours at Big Al's with the BSU wrestling team family watching the Pac-10's.

{I LOVE her face in this!!}  I finally got her birthday pic framed and put up. I can't even express how much I love this picture! And I love even more when she points to it in the morning and says "Chisis" :)

A couple more birthday party pics.....

Is this not so cute?! Uncle Alex was so nice to spend so much time with her while we were over in IF. Loved it.

Whittier Girls Fitness Challenge

I have had a few people asking me about the details of our fitness challenge, so I figured I might as well just put up the details on here for anyone wondering. We took some of the ideas from a few different friends' blogs but mostly came up with the details ourselves. We're only a week in, but so far it is great motivation! And we have a wide variety of participants: 1 in high school, 1 in college, 1 married with no kids, 2 married with kids, and 1 married and preggers! (Love you ladies!)

So how we did our fitness challenge is that there are 24 points possible each week. Each day you can earn a maximum of 4 points. You get one point each for: Getting at least 7 hours of sleep, drinking at least 64 oz. of water, exercising (like, a real workout that you make time for), and keeping a food log (we left how specific in your food journal you want to be to each person's discretion since not all of us are specifically trying to count calories or anything). We each just keep track of our own points for the week. Since you can only get 24 that gives you one "cheat" day for each thing out of the week.

There's a winner for each week's total amount of points--that award is a $5 gift card for somewhere. And then at the end of 10 weeks there will be a grand-prize winner for the total most points. That prize will be $100. Last week there was a tie for the top 2 with the most points, and so my mom (who isn't participating but is the one keeping track of everyone's points, the money, and sending out the prizes) just drew names or flipped a coin or something to decide the winner for that week.

Each of the 6 of us put in $30, which covered the $100 grand prize and all the $5 gift cards for each week.

Then there is also one more thing--we have 2-week-long "extra" challenges going on as well. For these we also earn a total of 6 points per week--one point per day if you did it. The challenges we have are: No eating 3 hours before bed, No sweets or treats, Eating at least 30 grams of fiber a day, and limiting "vegging" time with media to 1 hour a day. The winner of each of those challenges will get a $10 gift card.

Fitness Challenge Update #1

POINTS POSSIBLE: 24
POINTS EARNED: 22
CHALLENGE POINTS EARNED: 6 (continues for another week)
WEIGHT LOST: 3.3 lbs! (Tara will hate me posting this but it's part of my goal over the next couple months so deal! Don't worry, I am still Body Positive! :)

MY THOUGHTS:
BOOM! I thought I did SO good this week! Buuuutttt.... 2 people did even better than me! Dang. But congrats to them. (Andrea and Megan!) I wasn't even actually focusing on the points so much this week as just trying to get my ducks in a row to start eating healthier and keeping track of all the stuff we are measuring. I am actually in this to try to lose a few pounds that I have stealthily put on over the past few months; I am not surprised I did because I basically ate my way through my own personal sugar cookie village over the holidays. Yuck. I really was bad about what I ate. And then I completely stopped working out for a month around the end of wrestling season, which always seems to happen, it even did back when I didn't have a kid to work my exercise around.

The only thing I missed points on was 2 days of working out. I don't know if I am ever going to be at the point of getting all 6 points a week for working out, 6 days a week just does not seem possible to me, but I can probably get away with 5. I will keep trying! I am also trying to hit a specific calorie goal (in general) each day, and I felt like that was kind of my main focus that day. I have done that before in times I need to lose a couple of pounds and generally it works well for me, but it's also always a learning curve getting into the habit of choosing the healthiest snacks and meals that fill me up but aren't super loaded with fat and calories.

Here we go with week 2!

Sunday

Fitness Challenge!

Pretty much the story of my life

Drum roll..............

The Whittier Girls Fitness Challenge begins tomorrow!

My sisters, sister-in-laws and I have joined forces to push each other to get into better shape! It only took us 3 full days of spending time together to actually decide on something we thought would work!

I wanted to put it on here because hopefully I will be motivated enough to post updates on here!

I will be earning points for working out, drinking 64 oz of water a day, getting at least 7 hours of sleep a night, and keeping a food journal. We also have bi-weekly "extra" challenges that will be going on as well! These first two weeks it is no eating 3 hours before bed and it will be a rough adjustment for me and my emotional eating, but I am going to try!

We each put in and the grand prize will be $100, which is exciting, and then 2 people will also be winning $5 gift cards every week and every other week for the mini-challenges and weekly points as well. Whew! These last couple of years since I have had a child during wrestling season I have definitely ended up not in that great of shape by the time the end of February rolls around.... this year definitely no exception! I had always been planning on doing something to start getting in shape again once the season was over.... and this is going to be hard but awesome! Good luck all you Whittier ladies!

A Big Year for Wrestling!

Collin took his job as head coach at Centennial straight out of college, with two intentions: to be a great Spanish teacher, and to build a great wrestling program.

In spite of how his school district may treat him (and the rest of their employees), he is doing a phenomenal job as a teacher. But that is for a different post. This one is for wrestling!

This was Collin's 8th year as head coach-whew!

Centennial's record this year  was 19-2!

They placed in the top 3 in four (out of five) tournaments!

They won the District III title for the 4th year in a ROW! (5th total in Collin's career)

They KICKED trash at State and not only WON, but set a new record for total points scored in the 5A division.

Collin was awarded Coach of the Year, for the second time!

I was in IF during the tournament and didn't have the chance to come down to watch until the finals. I really wished I could have been there more, but luckily I got there in time for the real excitement!

The fabulous coaching team! With knee surgery and a working wife these guys really had Collin's back all season and it was such a huge group effort. They are a great group of guys!

Alex came down with us to watch....and enjoyed his first hamburger in 2 years!

Interview for the Statesman... she asked him like 20 questions then put in 1 sentence of a quote in the article,  oh well. :)
I'm proud of this guy! He is the most dedicated person I know. Definitely, it can be trying on our family and by the end of the season I was really missing having time together. But it is definitely comforting to know that all the endless work he puts in really is paying off. They only have 5 seniors graduating, so they should be continuing on pretty strong for the next few years also.

But for now, I am really, really enjoying actually seeing Collin more than an hour before bedtime! Ashlyn is too! And we are so proud of him and his accomplishments!

Ashlyn's 2 - Part 2

Ok, I know it appears that I am ridiculously spoiling this kid but really there is a good explanation for why we had 2 birthday parties....

Back when I started thinking about plans for her birthday a lot of things were still up in the air in regards to Alex's mission report, district wrestling, etc. etc. all on the weekend of her birthday. It was appearing that if Ashlyn and I went to IF for Alex's report, Collin would not be able to come, so he would miss her birthday. So due to that, I wanted to make sure that we had a little party with him there. That is why this birthday party idea was born!

Another reason is that we have so many dear friends here we really wanted to celebrate with all of them!

Of course after I had already sent out invites it turned out that Collin decided he would just power through a drive over to IF after districts got over to spend the day with us and then drive back home that night--a 24 hour trip basically. But I was already planning the party so it went on!

THEN Ashlyn totally got sick--gross nose and coughing sick--the day before the party! Of course I had already made all the stuff except for the edibles, which I had already bought all the supplies! So I just rescheduled for 2 weeks later. Which really made the birthday thing drag on but it was a fun party and I actually had a lot of fun putting it together.

And really, Ashlyn is our only kid and at this point, who knows how many more #2 birthdays we will have around here? I don't want to be an overly doting parent, but I think it was all worth it and fun.

I'm not a huge party planner but I had a lot of fun putting stuff together for this one! Maybe because I went with the whole "Big Red Barn" (her favorite book) theme and I knew she'd like it.

So I am just not going to take the time to edit these pics to make them all "pinteresty"....sorry. But I did take pics of some of the fun party stuff.

grr! why, blogger, will you not rotate my picture??

These had chocolate-covered popcorn.

"mud pies"

Ashlyn had a lot of fun opening presents, of course!

Greg took over the camera during picture time so I don't take any responsibility for these next pictures....

Yes, the photographer.

Of course our attempt at a pic of all the kids never works out! At least only Ashlyn and Brynlie were crying....that is improvement from some previous times!
