Robertsons 2010

I ordered Christmas cards 3 weeks ago but they apparently got lost in the mail... so this is what I would have been sending you! Merry Christmas!
We are thankful for the Christmas season and the real reason for all the celebration this Christmas season!
Collin is in his 6th year teaching Spanish and working as head wrestling coach at Centennial high school. He will graduate from U of I in May with a Masters in Educational Administration. He plans to continue working as a coach/teacher for a while, but will eventually probably become an Athletic Director. He's also the second counselor in young men. Besides that he has been super busy with other wrestling extras, like freestyle, K-5, and other programs.
Tonya is still teaching 30 piano students and doing some freelance accompanying for various jr. highs and high schools around Boise. She has also been busy with various volunteer organizations, working as the secretary for the local music teacher's association, and also working with the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation. She is the primary chorister and one of the ward organists. We got a puppy in February, a little miniature schnauzer named Lucy. That definitely was a lot of work for a while, but we love her!
Our big news is that we are hoping to adopt! We started the process with LDS Family Services last spring and are just about finished with the application process. We should be approved by the new year. We are very excited and hope you'll check out our blog (and our profile when it's up). We hear it's good to spread the word! Our blog address is:
We hope the holidays find you healthy and happy! We love you!
Love, Tonya and Collin

My No-Walmart Christmas

Here it is, December 17th, and I have not spent a single cent at Walmart since before Thanksgiving. (applause...) thank you, thank you.
Seriously though. Don't get me wrong, I am a #1 Walmart shopper when it comes to basically all household items: cleaner, makeup, shampoo, deodorant, contact solution. It's the only place I go, because I know it is the cheapest there. I have their prices for the things I regularly buy memorized.
But, that being said, I do have a problem with the whole Walmart monopoly. I really don't like that they keep getting bigger and bigger. As in, now you can not only buy all the household items you need (which is all Walmart used to be, remember?), but also all your groceries. You can even buy bulk groceries. And then, you can go to the eye doctor, get a hair cut, visit your bank, get your tires changed, and go out to lunch all without leaving your local Walmart. And probably depending on how new your Walmart is, it has what, a chiropractor, pet sitter, gym, and hotel?? You know it's coming, folks! And for some reason, having one huge corporate conglomorate in charge of all that doesn't make good sense to me. AND, you know they are doing it on purpose. Hmm, strategically placing certain items where you can't resist them as you walk by! Who doesn't go in there for one thing and come out with like, 10?!?
So anyway, I have always been in favor of supporting the "little guy." Unfortunately, the nature of being a teacher and being married to a teacher doesn't give me the luxury of shopping at the Boise Co-Op for everything I need, so I like to think of myself as supporting the "littler guy." I basically think pretty much every store, chain or not, is littler than Walmart. You have to agree. If you have ever been to Walmart any time between 11am and 9pm and seen those huuuge lines of people with carts (sometimes more than one!) packed to the brim, you know that place is raking in millions by the day.
So, although not entirely on purpose, I decided this would be a non-Walmart Christmas for me. I have not once gone there for anything--be it gifts, treats, even the stuff I usually buy there. And I really haven't spent more money than I usually do! I have merely shopped at sales at the likes of Kohl's, Home Depot, ShopKo, JC Penney, PetSmart, Ross, WinCo, and Albertson's. Like I said. Not the littlest guys, but the littler guys!
About a week ago I realized that I had not once gone to Walmart for anything so far this Christmas season. So from then on, I decided, why not just keep my business from them for the rest of the year? I haven't missed it so far, in many ways.
For one: Not having to stand in line behind Mr. You-Don't-Even-Want-To-Know buying Who-Knows-What that takes five billion years. Another: Not having to find a parking spot 5 miles back from the store.
Another: Shopping at more homey places like Kohl's, Penneys, and Albertsons is really fun to me!
And another: Just the pure satisfaction that, though I am only one, still I am one! And I'm one less person Walmart is making money from this year! When I drove by the parking lot the other day, I realized I'm probably the only one out there, but it still feels good!

32 Years Young

Even with 6am practice and piano lessons until 8:00 we managed to get out to Texas Roadhouse for a date night for ... someone's 32nd birthday! (hint: not mine!)
I have the best hubby in the world! He is the light of my life! Happy birthday to him!

A Tale of Thanksgiving

Part 1: An unexpected start

I was so excited for Thanksgiving break! Collin and I had not been seeing much of each other due to crazy schedules (especially him), so I was looking forward to having a whole week of a break for both of us. We started off Friday night by going to Applebee's to watch the BSU game, then to a movie. It was a fun night! Until. . . . I ended up with a small bowel obstruction! Are you kidding me?!?! Wasn't I just on here, talking about how thankful I am that I've been so healthy lately? Of course. So anyway, I was up in extreme pain all night, and along with the pain was the wondering of if it would get bad enough that I would have to go into the ER---which would mean nose tubes, possibly surgery..... it is not a good path to go down! But Collin gave me a blessing and thankfully around 2:30am I started feeling better. THANK GOODNESS. So I was up early the next morning to go work at the State MTNA Competition at BSU. But sadly.... things didn't get that much better! The initial blockage had passed but I was still having considerable pain and still felt like something was wrong. So, of course I knew better than to actually eat anything, which led to me actually being on clear liquids for the next 4 days! BOO! Nothing says Thanksgiving break like not being able to eat anything but jello, broth, and tea! Just kidding, obviously. But that really was all I could have. Not to mention I was still not feeling totally well. So, after tons of phone calls to and from the Dr's office, a trip to St. Luke's for X-rays, and an office visit with the dr, I was feeling better by Tuesday. They think I had an obstruction that only partially resolved Friday night, so it was still there through Monday. So even though it really sucked to not eat, I did the right thing because any food would have made it way worse! I was thankful to finally be feeling better, but it was kind of a bummer way to start our break. I feel really lucky it wasn't worse, but I also realized through all that that being able to eat food really does make me happy! For the rest of the week I was only allowed to eat soft stuff, un-fibrous stuff, so that was interesting since I'm used to eating the opposite. But it was better than no food!
Part 2: Trying to freaking get there
So, along with the whole illness/no eating/worried about what was wrong thing, the WEATHER was not cooperating at all! As anyone who tried to travel that week knows! It was insane! First it snowed a lot here, which is weird in the first place. Then it got ridiculously cold, like below zero. Which I don't even remember happening here before. Even if I had been feeling okay, we wouldn't have been able to travel to Utah Tuesday like we had planned because the freaking roads were closed! So, we ended up staying in Boise until Wednesday, partially so I could go to a dr. appointment and partially so the roads would be open for driving! I took this picture on our way to Utah, we thought it was funny because we didn't even know our car thermometer could do negatives. Huh, the things you learn driving 40 mph down a snowy road.

This is what the road looked like until we got to Tremonton. I am the biggest chicken when it comes to any sort of dangerous driving, probably due to the fact that all the wrecks I have been in have been due to icy roads. So I closed my eyes a lot of the time we were driving! Collin is good at handling them, though. We really did have to go 40 for a few hours, but we never slid off, which I consider a success! It took us almost 8 hours to make the usually 5-hour drive to Collin's parent's house. But who cares, we made it!

Part 3: Thanksgiving!
So, I had signed Collin and myself up for a 4-miler in Orem Thanksgiving morning, since our tradition has been to go running Thanksgiving morning for the past few years, I thought we might as well have some real motivation and get a shirt out of it! Well, due to my ridiculous eating and health conditions of the week prior, of course I changed my plans of running. Tyler was planning to come anyway, though, so we just used my race number!
It was 4 degrees when the race started! nice! As you can guess, I was very sad I was sitting in my car with the heater on full blast as the race went on. :)

Tyler earned my race number a nice 14th place in the Womens 25-29 division! Thanks!

So Thanksgiving at my in-laws is seriously insane. Darlyne always has sooooo much more food than any group of people could possibly eat. She's an amazing cook! That is part of why we have started the tradition of running every Thanksgiving!!
Just sitting down to eat--we had Morgan and Lana's family, Tyler, and Beau and Donna all there also. It was great to see everyone and get together.
Some yummy food shots...

Like I said, way more food than could ever possibly be eaten.

Darlyne always refuses to let us bring anything.... so I always bring these. They did get chowed down (especially by the kids, of course), so I felt like I contributed! I also made some pumpkin/cream cheese frosting sandwich cookies. mmm.

We always have fun playing games with the kids too. Collin ran Bingo.... and we always have like 50 games of Nerts (how do you spell that?) and we played Yahtzee this year too! Not to mention watching Kung Fu Panda and some other movies. It was great to have a day to be together and relax and have fun! Even with the fact that I could only eat mashed potatoes and jello salad!

And of course at any Robertson Boy get together you will have this....

and this .... (notice Lucy wishing she could get in on the action)

And this! We keep telling Jim and Darlyne they just need to put a wrestling mat out in their garage, since this always happens. It is pretty funny. Glad the boys have a good time when they get together.
It was a great trip! We had to leave the next day, sadly, so we were there for less than 48 hours! But it was better than staying in Boise, for million times sure. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Friday

Let the Season Begin!

I can't believe it's already wresting season again! Maybe because Collin's season just ended in August! lol!
Anyway, I'm excited for these boys and I'll be there cheering at their stuff! It is looking to be a pretty good year for the PATS! Don't you love the pic??

I am so impressed with Collin over the past few weeks, well I always am, but he has been so incredibly busy! As if it's not enough work teaching 3 levels of Spanish every day, he runs the Spanish club, he is doing an administrative internship for his Masters, he has had parent teacher conferences, he has been running the Patriot Reserves, their little kid program (which includes set up and take down of 2 mats every time), He is also on the board for their freestyle club, he has been organizing a little kid club to continue after Reserves, he is the young men's second counselor which means he goes to mutual every week. So basically, he has been at work from 7am to 8 or 9pm every week day for the past month. And Saturdays he has had various coaches clinics, meetings, blah blah. He is a super busy guy! I could NOT do all the stuff he is handling. I would have a nervous breakdown. Thankfully, today is his last insane day, then things will settle a little. And he can spend more time enjoying what he loves most....wrestling! Thanks for all you do honey! I love you!

Feeling Thankful

I had my every-other-year check in with my GI this week, and even though I knew I would beforehand, sure enough, I left with tears in my eyes due to the gratitude I feel for how healthy I have been! 10 years ago I spent many days and even weeks in the hospital due to ulcerative colitis, and trips to the GI were never fun because it meant I was getting sicker and they had to try to decide what to do. I can't remember all the details of all that transpired leading to me having major surgery to have my colon removed at the age of 16, but whatever it was, Heavenly Father was definitely looking out for me! I have met so many people through Take Steps, Education Conferences, and especially the Support Group I run, that have had the surgery I have, but have been dealing with problems with it ever since. I have to stop and think WOW! I've never had any problems. Okay, not entirely true, but when I look at what I do day-to-day, I really don't deal with any problems. It's a huge miracle, in my opinion. I know everything happens for a reason and I'm glad I've had this reminder that Heavenly Father must have more in store for me to do, giving me such great health. I better take advantage of it! I really do try to, and that is part of why I have been so involved with CCFA the past 6 years or so, but still! I am thankful, thankful, thankful that I have been blessed to lead a "normal" life even with the insanely complicated medical history I have!

Family Pics!

Our dear friend Kim was so kind to take our family pictures for our adoption profile, and she did such a fabulous job! So if you don't get enough pictures of just the 2 of us on this blog anyway, here are some more.
Check out KAH PHOTOGRAPHY, she does a great job!

PCP

Pumpkin Carving Party! We used to do these every year but dropped off for the last couple of years. We had some friends over again last week and had a good time! Collin and I wouldn't be motivated enough to carve pumpkins without some sort of get together, I guess. It was super fun to have everyone over. Collin, Matt and Laci (this table later collapsed!! Not kidding! Maybe now I can convince Collin we need a new card table!)
My little guy on the left, Collin's on the right.

Las chicas (minus Amber, who I was so glad came, and brought the cutest cookies I've ever seen)

Abby and Karter LOVED our little noise-activated spider, it was the #1 source of entertainment for like 2 hours.

Los ninos

Kim caught this cute picture. These guys were fast friends! Good thing because I realized our house needs to be more little kid friendly! They would have been really bored otherwise!

We all voted for BEST (Chandra and Dustin), SCARIEST (Collin), and UGLIEST (Matt). Nice work peeps! ;)

End of an era

....okay, not really an era, but you old roommates from Utah State (and a select other friends/sisters who were close to me at the time) will know exactly what this shirt is! It was my special Christmas present from my roomies back in that good old freshman year of 2002. (WOW has it really been that long??) It once said "I Love Grandpa*". And yes, the * is important! Those of you who don't know what the heck I'm talking about... let me explain: I was madly in love with a creepy granola guy (looking back this is what I perceive him as, but did I at the time? heck no.) who lived behind us who we nick named "Grandpa" due to his being the ancient age of 25 and all of us being barely 18. But this legendary sweatshirt, when the bottom is flipped up, contains the answer to the *. Sorry to say, you'll never know who it was if you don't already know exactly who I'm talking about! ;) And by the way, I got over that crush, thank goodness. Though I did marry a guy way older than me, who I do call a grandpa sometimes! RIP, I Love Grandpa* Sweatshirt. I finally threw it away last week. I know. Sad.
Thanks again, Em and Lauren.

Wednesday

Super Cute!

My sister in law Megan just started up a super cute stationery business, she really has some great stuff and it is reasonably priced too. If you are ever looking for announcements, invitations, super cute cards, or whatever, definitely go there first! Check out the button over on the side bar of My Favorite Things--Paper Route Stationery! Love it!
Check it out! Collin is really excited about this website getting up and running, though it barely started up I think. Anything getting the word out about the #2 RANKED BSU WRESTLING TEAM is good news to us! Click on the icon to check out their website, and check out my hubby in the gallery and the history

Resurfacing

Wow it has been a crazy few weeks! Tonight I finally have a few minutes to waste some time blogging and checking up on facebook! :)
Anyway, I think the last few weeks really flew by. We are so blessed and things are going really well. I'm glad a lot of what made things crazy was traveling because of my sis's wedding, and having family come visit. Weddings really are so much fun!

The reason this week has been crazy was purely self-induced. And the craziness will continue through next week. I really have a hard time saying no when someone asks me to share my piano ability. Seriously, what is my problem? I guess in the split second after they ask me if I can help them out, I think something like, "it's just playing the piano, it would be stupid to say no." So I say yes. And really, it IS just playing the piano! Something I spend most of my time either doing, thinking about doing, or teaching anyway. But I have been reflecting alot about my relationship with "piano playing" this week as I have seriously been spending 5 hours a day at the piano playing, which means I have been pretty stressed about it. I think the reason I stress about when I have piano commitments is the reason I have worked so hard and been so successful in music in the first place. Ever since I started my very first piano lessons when I was in second grade, I have always been driven to perfection in regards to piano. (as my mom can attest---that is pretty much the only thing I've ever been a big perfectionist on! :) I really have always been an extreme perfectionist in it. And honestly I think that's what it takes to be successful in the music world. A love of the craft, and perfectionist drive. So I'm not sad about it....but I am frustrated. I have really, really felt like a super crappy pianist all week. I have gone to bed feeling really discouraged. I've been wondering why, given the fact that really, compared to most people, I've accomplished quite a lot musically. And I know I have the skills to succeed in the things I've been working on. Yet I really have felt like a big loser each day. The music I've been working on is definitely the hardest accompaniment I've ever had to learn in such a short time, but still shouldn't be that difficult for "someone like me," (I keep telling myself). So I think that because I have become so invested in piano with it being my job and total source of income, it sometimes makes me more of a freak about it than I need to be. Collin accused me of "taking on too much" (not accused in a mean way, just mentioned it in passing after I probably bit his head off about some little thing due to my completely over-stressed-ness), and I really don't think it's that I took on too much. Yes, it's 4 very challenging advanced violin accompaniments and an entire high school choir concert that I had only one week to learn, but really, once I learned an entire choir concert the night before the concert. It shouldn't be that big of a deal to me.
I've come to understand that my real problem is my perfectionist drive. I get super frustrated when I'm not doing the best. And having just 3 days to learn 12 advanced pieces for a high school obviously leaves room for improvement. Now that I've gotten more of a handle on them, I am feeling much better and not nearly so stressed. (plus violin festival was tonight...whew, that's overwith!) I guess what I'm trying to say is that I have had a tough week coming to terms with the fact that I'm my own worst enemy! And I wish I had a quick fix for that, but I feel like it's a paradox that I don't see a way I can stop.
Whatever.

Saturday

Guest Post by ANDREA!

Well, yesterday Tara got married, so all morning, we were in Logan getting endless pictures outside the temple and then eating delicious food at their wedding luncheon, which was at a fancy place called Hamilton's. It rained up until 11:00, which was when they got married, so we had sunny but cold weather for the traditional post-ceremony photoshoot. We got to see a lot of extended family that lives further away, so we had a great time. This is Andrea outside the temple waiting for Tara and Paul to come out.
The happy couple!

This is Megan's reaction to the whole wedding. (just kidding)

My reaction to my new brother-in-law (just kidding- he's fine).

So, when my parents got married, my dad went to great lengths to keep his car from being decorated because he thought it was stupid or something. Well, Paul decided to try a similar thing, but luckily, our mom accidentally tipped off Sam about their plan so we started plotting. Sam, Megan, Alex, Jodee, and Andrea (photo above of them during the car ride up to IF) decided that once the wedding luncheon was over, they wouldn't let Tara and Paul out of their sight. So Tara and Paul left for IF and they were followed from a distance. When they got in town, there was a train that made Sam's car be stuck right behind Tara's for like 2 minutes! Luckily, Collin and I were sitting right next to Tara and Paul on the road so we distracted them from noticing the followers. I guess Sam and Alex had figured out that Tara and Paul were going straight to their hotel, and so they decided that meant they were going to leave the car there (nobody would tell where they were staying) and our dad would go pick them up and take them to the reception. So they they followed them and figured out that they were staying at the Ameritel. THey went and bought some stuff and decorated their car at the hotel after everyone else had left for the reception. Then, at the reception, they also decorated the car that the were driving back to the hotel. On the hotel car, they left a note that said, "Don't mess with the best." Double whammy for trying to outsmart us. Below is a picture of Tara and Paul's car.

(Just so you know....Andrea wrote all this but decided to make it sound like Tonya. if you know Andrea you know that is TYPICAL! :) Thanks for the wedding posts, Andrea. )

Girls Weekend

My mom and sistas came over for the Womens Fitness Celebration last weekend. It was so fun to have them all here! Even Tara came, though she has been busy getting ready for a wedding. After we spent a couple of hours shopping the Womens Show, we of course had to continue the tradition of eating at Merritt's every time Tara is here. If you've ever visited us in Boise we have probably taken you there. You know, that really trashy place that never replaces their duct-taped seats, but serves super yummy scones and milkshakes?

That day was ACTUALLY Collin and my anniversary so this is our lone 5th anniversary picture.

And here we are pre-race! Actually, we didn't really race, technically. We all signed up for the competitive run since that is what we all originally planned to do. But Mom had an achille's heel injury so we just slid in with a different wave and walked. I say we didn't race technically because walking with my mom is like running a race. We practically had to jog to keep up with her. We got really good at weaving through walkers and strollers!

Our team name was FitWhits (my maiden name/all their last names still is Whittier), --Andrea came up with that one. Then I put some rad (yes, rad) nicknames on the sleeves. The only one I messed up on was Jodee's--I put it on upside down. oops. But anyway--the nicknames were as follows:
Andrea: A-Bomb
Tonya: T-Bird
Tara: T-Pot
Jodee: Debbie
Mom: Mom Jeans
And that is how we rolled.
After the 5K we ate our tasty breakfasts and then did some shopping at Craft Warehouse and Target. Then had a delicious dinner at Old Chicago (my favorite) while watching the BSU Game of course, then we went home and watched Beaches! Classic!
It was a great girl time! Thanks for coming you guys! And Megan, you should come next year!

Brad Paisley!

We went to the Brad Paisley concert with Amber and Brady last week--it was great! Actually, the part we liked the best was his Special Guest Darius Rucker--who, I found out from Collin just a few days before the concert, is Hootie from Hootie and the Blowfish! He is great. It was a fun opener.
We liked Darius Rucker better than Brad Paisley just because for some reason, whatever idiot was running the sound system for Brad had the treble turned up super high and Brad's voice was faded almost so you couldn't hear it over the instrumentals. And I swear, I'm not just saying it was hard to hear him because we are old fogies at a concert like this! In my opinion country isn't one of those things that should have blasting guitar and vocals you can't hear.
BUT Brad was great!! We had the cheap seats clear up in the nosebleeds at first, but thanks to Amber's great idea we moved down way closer for the second half. Brad put on a super good show. I had been listening to his new CD so I knew those songs, but I was surprised at how many of his other songs I knew too! I'm not really a country listener so I guess Collin has forced those on me more than I had realized! They're funny songs though. It was fun.

The 4 of us! Thanks for going with us, Brady and Amber!
