Sonatina Festival

Sonatina Festival came, and went. And look at this, I'm still alive! This was something that I felt so much pressure about, I seriously considered resigning probably twice through the planning process. Back in August I was feeling that way! I really didn't know if I'd be able to successfully put it together.

Well, miracles happened, blessings occurred, stress and craziness ensued, and in the end, it all came together. 400 students participated. 44 teachers from around the valley participated. We had 10 judges, 7 of which flew in from around the northwest.

I spent SO many hours on that I couldn't even begin to count. (the president actually asked me if I would count up the hours I spent. I really couldn't!) I started working on it back in February, although it was just little things here and there until October. Then once the students signed up things were crazy!

I'm not going to talk about any more details because-you would think that after it was all said and done I would not have to think about it for a while. Well, I think today is finally my last day to have to think about it for a while! I had a meeting today about it. I also had a meeting last week. And the week before that I was still replying to emails and dealing with some minor issues. So I really hope to put all this out of my head from now until at least February!! (yes, I have to do this one more year. It may be one of the reasons I am hoping we end up moving next summer, ha ha!)

If I had to sum up my thoughts, it would be that there are a lot of good people out there willing to help. I guess I am one of them too, since I ended up "helping out" by chairing this event. But when I needed to delegate or needed fires put out, thankfully teachers came together and solved problems. It is, after all, for the students. I think with something that's a competition sometimes that's forgotten. And I did hear more than my share of catty comments and competititve words shared, for sure. But I left with an overall sense of being greatly helped out, thank goodness!

This was the best year for my own students I've had in this competition. I had one win her level (my first winner ever), and 3 others receive Honorable Mentions. I only put 8 students in, and 2 of them I knew from the start wouldn't put the work in to be prepared. So I really figure I had 6 out of 8 recognized. Yea!  I have only been putting students into it for about 6 years now. But I feel a close connection with this competition because I participated in it over in Eastern Idaho while I was growing up!

Here are a couple of lame pictures I have to document some of the work put in:
one of the bins full of binders, copies, folders, envelopes, and more....all part of organizing a competition that has both preliminaries and live finals!

This was my to-do list one day. One day. Similar to-do lists happened pretty much every day the last 2-3 weeks leading up to it.
This was my celebration the night after it was over. Collin was so sweet and had left Ben and Jerry's waiting for me in the freezer when I got home. Sunday night was all about PJs, ice cream, and of course Dr. Quinn! :)
If you happen to be dying to read more about the event, or just check out the names of the winners, it's all on our website. (this was also the maiden voyage year of us having registration, results, and everything else exclusively online--so that took up a ton of time collaborating as well!) www.treasurevalleymta.org

Thanks for listening to me complain so much!

Date Night

We went on a fun date night with some of our buddies recently. We hang out with these friends a lot, but it's pretty much always with kids! It was nice to get to chat un-interrupted and have some fun somewhere besides the park or someone's house! We went bowling and then to Merritt's. Oh yeah.
(and I totally stole these pictures from Lindy's blog. Thanks Lindy!)
Some of my favorite girls-Lindsay, Chandra, Jacqui, and Lindy.
I bowled probably my best game ever (beat COLLIN even!) but the girls still lost to the boys. Oh well.

Our crowd enjoying some Merritt's.

Miss Ashlyn

She will literally do this for over an hour. I have left her in there a few times and just checked on her while she plays. She is in absolute heaven. Except last time she dumped out the jockey box and middle console.... that wasn't cool.

Awesome trick she figured out--can stick a thin spoon handle in between her two bottom teeth!

Tried to get a shot of the fro in its glory. It is so awesome.

Having a good time walking in the leaves

November 12 marked our 2-year temple anniversary. Crazy it has been so long, but also seems like it's been even longer.

We celebrated by meeting Daddy at the park to play and have Subways. I love her little fingers around my neck in this picture.

We made a trip to the zoo a few weeks ago, she was really insistent that I take pictures of her at pretty much everywhere we stopped.

She loves walking Lucy. Lucy hates it, but is a pretty good sport.

Grandma and Grandpa came to visit last weekend, Ashlyn was in heaven having someone to read her stories and entertain her. Grandma really is the best story reader!
She was absolutely enthralled with this little train setup at Toys R Us. After over 30 minutes I had to pry her away and lead her out of the store screaming. Sometimes 2 year olds are so fun.

We had our first snow! It happened to be a day I was gone all morning but Collin took Ashlyn out to play in it before it melted. We still need snowpants and snow boots, as you can see. But they had a good time checking it out. I think she wasn't sure if she liked playing in it or not.

Collin also took her to the zoo that snowy day! (like I said, I was gone. This is what happens when I'm gone! :) )  Looks like she was having a great time there too.
A couple of cute things she does before I forget....
She pronounces things with a "t" at the end like a "p." Like, for scoot she says, "scoop scoop" and for notes she says "nopes." It's so cute.
She has taken to calling me "Mom".... guess I better get used to that. I thought "Mommy" went away way too fast, and I was sad when she started saying Mom instead! Oh well. It's pretty cute, except for when she doesn't want to take a nap and I hear "Mom! Mom! Mom! Mom! Mom! Mom! Mom! Mom!" for like 30 minutes straight coming from her room.
She loooves to play tag and anything that involves someone chasing her.
Whenever I go in to get her up in the morning or from a nap, she always says "I'm awake! My eyes are open! I'm blinking!" Where she got this I have no idea? It's pretty funny though. Like I was wondering about that stuff??

Honestly she has been a little stinker the past few weeks. I thought that after the first couple of months the "terrible twos" really took a big step back and things went pretty well for most of the year. But it's like all of a sudden she feels the need to challenge authority on everything again, but worse?! It has been really frustrating! Beyond all the work of taking care of a kid and house and being a mom/wife in the first place (not even counting job here as well), having a kid who throws a fit any time you try to get her to do anything really makes that stuff seem so much harder! Ugh! And I only have one kid to deal with! So, luckily she is cute and she pretty much sleeps through the night. But I have really been at my wits end soooo many times in the past few weeks. Sigh.

Thursday

5K

The Push 5K did happen.... about 6 weeks ago! It was the same day as my Halloween Recital, and the night after our pumpkin party. But we made it! Lindy and I decided to sign up for it late in the summer, and I did train for it about halfway through my training plan before I got sick..... so I wasn't feeling very prepared.
The race was just for moms with joggers--well not exclusively moms, but parents, you know, to be PC. Anyway, I didn't love that we had to pick up our race packets the day-of, no other option. Simply because it meant we had to get there way earlier than I would ever want to, with a kid in tow. Ashlyn started getting pretty antsy as we were having to just hang around at the starting line. Thankfully they did have some fun things--pinwheels and suckers for the kids. Once we got going in the race she was great, and had a good time riding along with us.

Lindy was a SUPER good sport and kept my slow pace, even though she was constantly getting ahead of me, pushing her 2 kids in the double jogger while I struggled with my one! And to fully confess....Collin actually ran along with me, and did end up pushing the jogger the last mile! (ducks head) But I am proud that that was all he had to push it for, and I did run the whole way! ("run" being used very loosely here) It was nice to feel the accomplishment of finishing a race, even if this one was super laid back, wasn't timed, and was just for fun.

Yea! Check out that action shot across the finish line! :)

Halloween

Catch up time!
Halloween was crazy this year! This was the first year I actually took the time to make a family costume. Well, with all the craziness we were never all 3 dressed up at the same time, although we each dressed up more than once! Does that make sense?! It's stupid, that's what it is! So, no awesome "family halloween costume" picture for us, even though not only did we have coordinating costumes, but I MADE them! Whatever.

I had a Halloween Recital.... was so fun. The last time I had one was 5 years ago!

This student is a girl! Awesome costume huh!

Since Collin and I were all decked out, we decided to go to Rockies, this 50's diner. Whew, ended up being SO awkward when we walked in. Everyone was staring at us. But, they gave us a free milkshake in exchange for us letting them take our picture to be put up on their facebook page!

Treats... I made them all. I had lots of help with decorations and servingware and other stuff. Good thing I have awesome friends!

We of course hit up the Pumpkin Patch too:

Ashlyn was in HEAVEN in their little petting farm! And really, they had some super-cute baby animals in there!

Then there's this: (her idea!)

Somewhere in there we ended up hosting a pumpkin carving party with some of our good friends. . .

Collin was asked to be a clinician at a wrestling coaches' workshop in AZ the last weekend before Halloween . . . which meant Ashlyn and I were on our own for Boo at the Zoo and our ward Trunk or Treat.

This is the only picture I got at Boo at the Zoo. Ashlyn got TONS of compliments on her little costume. She really looked stinking cute. But I left thinking it was a darn good thing we got in free (zoo pass) because it was INSANE! SO many people and really, not that much fun stuff for a kid Ashlyn's age. Probably won't bother with it again for a few years at least!

Enjoying cornbread at the ward chili cook-off/trunk or treat

Yes we were both decked out in our poodle skirts but it was so busy I didn't get to ask anyone to take our picture.....again.

Oh wait, here is a picture of all 3 of us! ha ha ha. Collin made that cut out for real. Too bad I waited until Ashlyn was crashing from all the sugar she'd had and completely out of control to try to get a picture.

The actual day of Halloween was fun. I had an insane, insane last like 10 days before that. Sonatina Competition was taking up every spare moment of my time, and I was staying up past midnight every night and getting up early to get things done so I wouldn't have to just sit Ashlyn in front of the TV all morning while I worked. It was very stressful and maybe I will post more about that later...but just saying things had been so crazy. I vowed not to work on that stuff on Halloween, to have that be a family day!
So, we started off our morning going to Target, wahoo! (that always means it will be a good day!) Then met some friends at the park for Ashlyn to run around with. When we got home, Collin came home for a little while because our caseworker came over to renew our homestudy. Basically at this point it's just sit and chat for a little while. So, it was nice to officially get our homestudy renewed and be done with that process. Collin had to go back to school to get some work done, but Ashlyn and I watched Diego's Halloween and then we all had a Jack O Lantern pizza from Papa Murphy's for dinner! Yea!  We met up with some of our good friends, the Golds and the De La Cerdas, for Trick or Treating in a big neighborhood that is part of our ward. Ashlyn was just a little excited as you can see:

She was absolutely thrilled. Between Boo at the Zoo and the ward trunk or treat she had gotten trick or treating all figured out! She knew she was getting CANDY! ha ha.

She lost steam pretty fast though. She refused to take a nap that day and well, what do you know, turns out she could have used one. For the first couple of streets she was almost running from one house to the next, but after that we were pretty much dragging her along. We only went around for about an hour and a half, which was plenty for her. Stopped off at the fabulous Cheryl's for donuts after that, and then headed home. It was a fun night! Ashlyn held up pretty well. And she was very happy to get lots of candy. (yeah, Collin and I ate almost all of it over the next few days. Don't pretend you all don't do that too. We did save the suckers and smarties for her though.)
Happy Halloween!

Saturday

Thoughts

I have been meaning to get on here and rant. You're so lucky that I have not had time! But not having the time to even rant on my blog.... has just given me the urge to rant even more! ha ha. Anyways, it's late and so I'm not going to write much. But there are a few thoughts I would like to share. Not looking for sympathy or advice or anything in between...just a disclaimer......although I love you and all the support you constantly give me!

1. I have STRUGGLED with waiting so long for our next child. Not like you probably haven't already gotten that sense from me. But it's true. I don't know what I expected when we embarked on this second adoption journey. But it wasn't having to wait 4 months for the money to even start the process, then to wait a full year (so far) after our approval with literally nothing going on. We were contacted by one birthmom back in January, and that was it. For real. Nothing. else. at. all. (although our profile has been viewed over 800 times. Is that better or worse news?!?) In the time since we have been approved I have seen 8 of my close friends have babies and 3 more good friends be chosen for adoptions. I am literally surrounded by babies. Don't get me wrong, I love that! It's nice to get to spend time with babies! But it's also in my face, all the time, that for some reason, I am not getting in on this joy that it feels like pretty much everyone around me is. I really don't want any of my friends to feel awkward reading this. I promise I'm not filled with loathing thoughts whenever I'm around you--heck no not at all! But in the grand scheme it's worth mentioning that I do feel like I'm at my prime baby-having age and it's just not happening, and it's hard. We really did just pay to renew our homestudy, and that finishes up in the next 2 weeks. It has been depressing getting to this point. This really isn't something that consumes me every day. I love our life and how everything is in our wonderful little family. I am generally happy and optimistic about the future. But this is also something that seems to be constantly on my mind. Especially the last couple of months--since I had really, really been hoping we wouldn't be one of those couples that has to renew at the 1-year mark. So maybe that has made it seem more urgent to me. Not that it matters since nothing happened! :) And now that we're actually renewing, I'm kind of like, "well, whatever. since we just paid our $340 we might as well get a few more months out of this." But that said, the birthmom out there who has/will have our next child, gets prayers from me every day.

2. This is still about #1. But it's a little more positive! I went to an adoption class about a month ago, just to keep me going, you know? And the main point everyone kept talking about was how important "confirmation" is. And it was a big reminder and strengthener to me--that that is what matters. And what came to my mind was the strong, strong, strong confirmation I got that we needed to pursue adoption again, clear back in April of 2012. There's not a doubt in my mind that we are on the right path, at least.

3. This is also sort of about #1. After that same class I attended that I mentioned in #2, I sat in the parking lot and bawled my ugly cry for a good 20 minutes. I was just so overcome with emotion, and mainly just feeling like I was swimming in a lot of turmoil as far as knowing what my purpose as a mother is and blah blah blah.... a lot of stuff that I won't bore you with. I was emotional. Just like I have been like, at any given time in the past 8 months. What is my problem anyway?!? I'm a woman, that's what! So anyway, it was a low, low night. Uplifting in some ways, but I was feeling mostly pretty low. I drove the long way home so I wouldn't look like a complete train wreck when I got home to my dad (who was visiting) and Collin. When I got home and opened up the computer, I was handed one of the hugest tender mercies: Ashlyn's birthmom had gotten in touch with me! (I hadn't heard from her since before Ashlyn turned 1.) The next week was filled with communication back and forth with her. I cried as I read her emails, and she cried as she read our adoption blog and the wonderful things we said about her on there. We caught up and sent love to each other. It was a really sacred, special time for me. And I know that Heavenly Father was deliberate in his timing. It seemed to be just what I needed in that dark time. Being able to get in touch with the woman who means so, so much to me, and has a connection with me that no one else does. She is Ashlyn's other mom, the woman who made our family possible, who sacrificed more than I can comprehend to make sure Ashlyn got all she deserves. I have so, so much love for her that my heart seems to overflow with it. Being able to share life with her has meant so much to me. It really lifted me up and rounded out my life at a point that I really needed it.

4. Ok, no more adoption talk. (I'm sure you're relieved!) Other things that are going on around here are... I have been sick! I got so sick for like 2 weeks. This is annoying for many reasons. Is being sick ever not annoying? Anyway, this time was a combination of so many weird things I wasn't sure what was wrong. This time was bad enough that I even went to clear liquids for a couple of days, and then had nothing but Boost for a couple more days after that.  My doctor was of no help and just ordered like every expensive, difficult test there is. I prayed hard that I would start to feel better because our insurance doesn't cover the tests and I had a feeling they wouldn't find a whole lot more out. With my complicated medical history I often can figure out what's wrong more accurately than the drs and this was one of those times that I didn't think they knew what they were talking about. Too bad I didn't know what was wrong either! But anyway, thankfully after 2 weeks I have slowly but surely felt a little better each day this week. Finally Thursday was the first full day that my stomach didn't have cramps all day. Hallelujah! So here's hoping things keep going up hill and whatever was wrong doesn't come back!

5. So this is sort of an extension of #4. I signed up for a 5K with my friend back in August.....and it is next weekend! Well guess how much I have run since I've been feeling so crappy? Big fat zero. That's been almost 3 weeks! And also, this isn't just a regular 5K, it's one for moms with strollers. Boy I am so screwed! Oh well.

6. I am in the crazy, insane, super busy, nightmarish throes of my first (of two) year as chairperson for the IMTA Sonatina Competition. Just shoot me now. I have spent at least an hour emailing every day in regards to this--along with phone calls, processing payments, sorting out registration, assigning committees, communicating with the 10 judges, working out hotel reservations and food details, ironing out BSU reservations, parking, and catering, etc. etc. etc. etc. And I think, "why am I doing this??" It's a long story but it was the lesser of two evils as far as taking a volunteer position. And it was 2 years ago that I agreed to do it. Anyway, back to the details about this, there are 400 students signed up. 45 teachers from around the valley participating. 10 judges, 7 of which fly in from all over the northwest. It's a competition, taken pretty seriously. It's on Nov. 2, and although I'm terrified of being in charge of such a huge event, I'm also counting down to it being over!!!

7. I finally can't think of anything else! Well, I guess I could give some thoughts about the whole Obamacare thing and the government shut down, but let's keep politics out of this, and it's also way too late for me to get all fired up. Thanks for listening!

Fun Times

We made a trip to Idaho Falls a couple of weeks ago.....wahoo! After an insane week of anniversary celebrating, Moppet Togs (consignment sale) shopping, my dad being in town, mutual activity, student duet rehearsals, group lessons, doctor appointments, and the usual day to day stuff, Ashlyn and I took off Thursday night with my dad to head over. We left Boise at about 7:00..... with our $1 subs from Jimmy John's since it was $1 sub day! Thanks to Dad who scored those for us. Anyway, I had to take a picture of this sign because it just bugged me SO much!
It's fettuccine people. FETTUCCINE!

So, after a late-night arrival the next day we did this and that. I took Jodee to lunch, I made some awesome Rolo-stuffed chocolate cookies, and most importantly, we went to the Emotion Bowl! ha ha. My high school, Idaho Falls, vs. their arch-rival, Skyline. It has been a rivalry for I don't know how long. It's even in this "American High School Rivalry Series" or something..... I don't really know much about that but I guess it's a recognized decent rivalry! Anyway, I have only been back to one Emotion Bowl since I graduated in 2002, before this one. I hope that means I'm not too much of an Uncle Rico. :)  Actually, my only Uncle Rico moment would be getting sentimental as the Tigerettes perform, and since there is no such thing as Tigerettes at all any more (*a moment of silence, please*), there goes that.

Somehow I got roped into going super early with these yahoos to save a spot for all 10 of us! We had a good time! (I put this pic in just for you, Andrea. You're welcome.)

 Yeah! Tiger Pride!

Collin and the rest of the crew arrived right when the game started. I was wearing like 5 layers and also covered in a quilt! But there were so many people packed in I stayed pretty warm! IF won by a lot....although I can't remember how much. But that was fun! And we got to mock all the students as they rushed the field and spray-painted the goal posts orange, which is also always fun.

The next morning we were treated to breakfast by Grandma and Charles, who had flown in from Denver for the weekend! I am really beginning to like this tradition again now that Ashlyn will actually sit and eat some breakfast. She downed a ginormous cinnamon roll and was happy as a clam.

This is an example of the type of reaction she typically gives Cory and all his craziness. She absolutely loves him and Paul--who I would consider the 2 weirdest guys in the family! (I hope you show them that I said that, Tara and Hayley! ha ha.)

Sunday was the reason we all actually came..... little sister Jodee's mission farewell! She is off to San Antonio Texas for the next 18 months. She is the "nice" sister if I had to pick one.... (come on you guys know it's true), and I am really going to miss her a lot! Her talk was so great. Ashlyn sat with my parents during it, so I don't know how much they heard but I got to listen to the whole thing! :)

After the big family lunch after church (which I actually slept through because I was so sick I could only have clear liquids and I felt like crap.....but that is another story for a whiny blog post), we attempted a picture of the 3 little Whittier grandkids!
This was by far the best one! There was a crowd of like 8 people behind me all cooing at them, no wonder they were acting like total deer in the headlights. It was so, so funny. Grace is 16 months, Ashlyn 2.5 years, and Adalyn is 5 months. I am so excited for these 3 to be buddies as they get older.

And for your enjoyment, here are a few of my favorite outtakes:

(if you can't tell, the only thing keeping Ashlyn on the couch is that ginormous cookie she is stuffing into her mouth. I think she sat so well because she was afraid someone was going to take it away before she could eat it all.)

And here we are just about to say goodbye to Sister Whittier. I wish she could read this so she could see me saying, " I MISS YOU ALREADYYYYY!!!" But she's way too obedient to sneak blog reading, so I don't think she'll see it. Anyways, we're excited for her and proud of her. It was a fun weekend to be together.
